Active Advantage let was founded by Guy Thomas, a LTA qualified tennis coach since 2008. Guy partnered Andy Murray in doubles, as a junior played the grand slam including the quarter finals of Wimbledon, US Open and Austrailian Open and was world ranked number 32. Guy is currently number 6 in the world as a touchtennis player. Guy is proudly sponsored by Head now and is on the way up.
Guy’s enthusiasm for coaching grew during his training with the LTA. He realised that he had the potential to help children and adults excel in tennis with his dynamic, innovative and inspiring coaching style. Guy is an extremely rounded tennis coach. He started his career as a performance coach in Hertfordshire and then took his expertise West of the country to Gloucestershire. Here, Guy worked as a performance coach for a large tennis centre and provided the coaching at Cheltenham Ladies’ college.
Feeling it was time to diversify and develop further, Guy moved back to Hertfordshire to work as head coach for a few small clubs; leading on the development of the clubs’ coaching programmes. Here, Guy initiated tots tennis, cardio tennis, adult coaching, junior coaching, touchtennis sessions, multi-sports holiday camps and competitive team sessions.
Active Advantage also holds the Hertsmere borough council contract for Cardio tennis, delivers bespoke 1-2-1 coaching at private residences and hotels and hosts tennis birthday parties and team building events for all age ranges and abilities.
Over the last few years, Guy has built a school’s coaching programme from scratch. Active Advantage now provides coaching in over 15 schools across Herts, Beds & Bucks. Run by a number of LTA qualified and DBS checked coaches, the schools’ coaching programme has been a huge success. Classes of up to 24 children improve their agility, balance, co-ordination, racket skills, match play and techniques over a 45 minute-1 hour session. Guy and the team of coaches work closely with the head teacher and PE department to deliver a bespoke coaching package that suits the needs of the school and its pupils.
Active Advantage is governed by the LTA. This means public liability, professional indemnity, employers liability, first aid training, safeguarding and DBS applications are all administered and controlled by the LTA.
All coaches that work for Active Advantage are carefully selected. Guy personally interviews each coach, checks references, DBS, first aid certificate and LTA qualification. Guy then provides ongoing mentoring and support to each coach, with a weekly check in and regular face to face meetings. Guy and his team of coaches regularly attend courses to maintain their licence and keep up to date with the ever-changing landscape of the tennis coaching world.
